There's nothing better than a warm mug of hot cocoa during the winter months. Chocolatey ✅, Creamy ✅, Hot ✅, Sweet ✅, it ticks all the boxes! What if you could have a healthier dairy-free version that is equally creamy? Well, we've answered your prayers and present... ✨ Hot BamNut Cocoa ✨.
What's the difference between "hot cocoa" and "hot chocolate"?
Hot cocoa is made with cocoa powder, while hot chocolate is made with melted chocolate. While hot cocoa has a thin and light consistency, hot chocolate is thick and has a deeper, chocolate flavour. In our recipe though, you get the best of both worlds with the option to add chunks of chocolate into the drink at the end!
Tips to enjoy a healthier version of hot cocoa
The traditional hot cocoa can feel super indulgent and decadent, but fret not! There are simple ways to make it healthier without sacrificing taste, so you can enjoy a cup of hot cocoa everyday if you wanted to!
1. Swap out dairy milk with plant-based milk (psst... BamNut Milk!)
2. Swap the sugar for honey, maple syrup, or coconut palm sugar.
How to use BamNut Milk to make Hot Cocoa
In this recipe, we simply replace dairy milk with our plant-based BamNut Milk Everyday which is made of Bambara groundnuts. This plant-based milk has 31% less fat than cow’s milk, which is perfect for a super creamy but healthier version of hot cocoa.
3.5 cups BamNut Milk (Everyday)
½ cup sugar
2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
⅓ cup hot water
Salt (a pinch)
Chocolate bar
Marshmallows
Whipped cream
Mix sugar, salt, and cocoa powder in a heat-proof bowl.
Add hot water to mix and bring over a hot stove.
Heat until slightly simmering.
Add BamNut Milk and stir until well combined.
Heat until just boiled and switch off heat.
Break a small chunk of the chocolate bar and add to a mug.
Pour over the hot cocoa and top off with some marshmallows, whipped cream, and shaved chocolate.
Enjoy while hot!
