THE DBS

GIVING TREE

Our end-of-year festivities often produce considerable waste – from food, to plastics and decorations. DBS group has committed to working towards zero waste and carbon neutral operations as part of the bank’s goal to be the best bank for a better world. Last year, it housed its first ‘Giving Tree’ project that included end-of-year decorations around the values of sustainability, fellowship, and circular economy.

What's Planned

With The Giving Trees?

Each Giving Tree will be a 100% circular tree that embodies the spirit of sustainability. Its modular structure is composed of wooden wine crates donated by Napoleon Food & Wine Bar and Giron Wines, as well as crates made out of up-cycled pallet wood. The crates will be repurposed at the end of the festive season into Chinese New Year decorations, and thereafter reused by DBS to make Giving Trees for the following years.

Giving Tree

One part of the Giving Trees’ decorations will be food products from Social Enterprises WhatIF Foods and Ugly Food packed in completely plastic-free packaging. WhatIF Foods creates tasty foods for diversified diets using Future Fit Crops that nourish us and our planet as well as empower smallholder farming communities. Ugly Food champions zero food waste by procuring potential fresh produce wastage that is either “ugly” or in surplus from suppliers. They are the advocates of “Ugly” - through their offerings, they want people to discover and appreciate the beauty within cosmetically-damaged fruits and vegetables.

The trees will also be decorated with reused Christmas ornaments from previous end-of-year decorations of DBS, and plantable papers by Chin Long embedded with basil seeds that can be planted in a pot or outdoors.

Who Benefits

From The Giving Trees?

On top of representing DBS bank’s effort to give back to the planet, the Giving Trees truly deserve their name as the food products will be used or given away for caritative causes:

  • A New Year’s meal made of a part of the food from the trees will be cooked up by Chilli Padi for 100 DBS frontline workers.

  • Over 1100 beneficiaries from AMKFSC will receive sweet treats for Christmas made by GLAZE out of the WhatIF BamNut Ube and Apple Cinnamon Shake powder.

  • The rest of the food products will be donated to the Singapore Food Bank.

Where Can I Find

 A Giving Tree?

This year, the Giving Trees will be displayed starting November 23 at 3 DBS offices and for the first time, also available for the general public at 4 DBS retail branches. Come discover the Giving Tree at your nearest DBS or POSB retail branch!
