With so many different plant-based milk options available these days, it’s easy to feel lost in the information overload! Which is the healthiest? Which is organic? Which contains the most protein? That's why we're here to give you the low-down on what you need to know when choosing the healthiest plant-based milks for your coffees, cereals, and other meals.

What is Plant-Based Milk?

Plant-based milk refers to any non-dairy alternative to traditional animal milk and can be made from a variety of sources, including nuts, seeds, grains, and legumes. It is generally more sustainable than animal milk, as it requires less water, land, and energy to produce.

There are several types of plant-based milk, such as almond milk, soy milk, oat milk, chia seed milk, rice milk, and BAMnut Milk. But what exactly makes each milk different from the others? There are 5 characteristics you can look out for to determine which milk is best for your tastes and needs.

Tasting the Difference with the Healthiest Plant-Based Milk

An obvious difference is taste & texture, which can make or break your experience of plant-based milks in your drinks and meals.

Milks can vary in thickness, creaminess, and nuttiness based on the source ingredient used. BAMnut Milk is made from Bambara groundnuts, which are a hardy legume with a creamy, smooth, and mild nutty aftertaste.

Because of these differences in taste & texture, some plant-based milks work better for some uses compared to others.

For coffee, milks that are neutral but creamy are best suited.

For smoothies, smooth, nuttier and sweeter milks would work best.

For baking, high-protein milks help to give structure to your cakes and breads and help them turn out nicely golden-brown in color.

When it comes to versatility, our 3 variations of BAMnut Milk have you covered!

  • BAMnut Barista Milk and coffee are a match made in heaven: criminally creamy yet neutral in taste and it gives you the perfect froth on top of your coffee!
  • BAMnut Everyday Milk works beautifully in cooking and baking, with its balanced creaminess and nuttiness, smooth mouthfeel, and high protein-content!
  • BAMnut Airy Milk is a low-calorie option with neutral flavors and light creaminess to be used for smoothies, shakes, and even cocktails and mocktails!

The Nutritional Plant-Based Milk

The nutritional value of plant-based milks can vary based on levels of nutrients such as protein and fiber.

The healthiest plant-based milks can be a great source of protein. However, legume and nut milks tend to be higher in protein than seed and grain milks. Likewise, fiber content differs from milk to milk. Grain & legume milks tend to be higher in fiber than nut and seed milks. That's why BAMnut Milk is superior in nutritional value, with its high protein, fiber, and iron content. Made with only 3 natural plant-based ingredients (Bambara groundnuts, coconut oil, water), BAMnut Milk helps you feel at your best by getting the right nutrition that keeps you sustained, energized and full throughout the day!

Plant-Based Milks also differ in the ingredients added during production.

Sweeteners, thickeners, minerals, and vitamins are commonly added in plant-based milks to improve taste, texture, and nutritional content.

Common sweeteners that are added include cane sugar and rice syrup. However, compared to the naturally-occurring sugars present in BAMnut Milk, refined sugars tend to be digested faster and may harm your blood sugar metabolism over time.

Xanthan gum and guar gum, which are common thickening agents added to plant-based milks, have been linked to digestive issues, weight gain, and increased risk of colitis. Some milks also use GMO oils as a thickening agent (e.g. corn, soybean, sunflower, canola, rapeseed) which can cause digestive issues if you have a sensitive stomach. That's why our Non-GMO BAMnut Milk is a completely clean plant-based milk that only contains 3 natural plant-based ingredients (Bambara groundnuts, coconut oil, water) and absolutely ZERO nasties.

Fortification of milks with Vitamin D, Vitamin B12, and Calcium help create a nutrient balance that is comparable to cow's dairy milk. In BAMnut Milk, we've made sure to include sufficient levels of these 3 essential nutrients so you’re not missing out.

Some plant-based milks can be allergenic, such as almond or soy milk.

If you need to be careful of allergens, take a look at the ingredients and allergy warnings to choose a milk that is non-allergenic for you. BAMnut Milk is not allergenic for those with nut allergies, making it the perfect alternative to nut milks. However, do note it may still be allergenic for those with legume allergies.

Still confused about which milk to try? Our BAMnut milks bring out the best in each of the 5 characteristics!
